Chapter 36

將欲歙之,必固張之;將欲弱之,必固強之;將欲廢之,必固舉之;將欲奪之,必固與之,是謂微明。柔勝剛,弱勝強。魚不可脫於淵,國之利器,不可以示人!

jiang yu xi zhi, bi gu
zhang zhi
將欲歙之,必固張之

When you are intended to absorb someone, you should make him open himself up first.

jiang yu ruo zhi, bi
gu qiang zhi
將欲弱之,必固強之

When you are intended to weaken someone, you should make him fortify himself first.

jiang yu fei zhi, bi
gu ju zhi
將欲廢之,必固舉之

When you are intended to deactivate someone, you should elevate him first.

jiang yu duo zhi, bi
gu yu zhi
將欲奪之,必固與之

When you are intended to seize someone, you should yield first.

shi wei wei ming
是謂微明

This is enlightenment through the dimming strategy.

rou sheng gang, ruo sheng qiang
柔勝剛,弱勝強

The lithe can overcome the rigid one. The fragile can overcome the strong one.

yu bu ke tuo yu yuan
魚不可脫於淵

The lake is where fish live within and cannot live without.

guo zhi li qi, bu ke
yi shi ren
國之利器,不可以示人

The social device, which benefits the whole country, is too magnificent to expose entirely in front of the people.
