Chapter 24 Standing on your tiptoes

 

Chapter 24

企者不立,跨者不行。自見者不明,自是者不彰,自伐者無功,自誇者不長。其於道也曰:餘食贅行,物或惡之,故有道者不處。

qi zhe bu li
企者不立

Standing on your tiptoes to look taller unnaturally does not suffice you to stand stably.

kua zhe bu xing
跨者不行

Striding extensively to be ahead unnaturally does not suffice you to walk steadily.

zi xian zhe bu ming
自見者不明

Using your high status to give orders cannot make the people respond to you.

zi shi zhe bu zhang
自是者不彰

Deeming yourself as the superior cannot make the people accept your high status.

zi fa zhe wu gong
自伐者無功

Acquiring achievement for your own good cannot make the people honor you.

zi kua zhe bu zhang
自誇者不長

Boasting about yourself cannot make the people respect and follow you.

qi yu dao ye yue, yu shi zhui xing, wu huo wu zhi
其於道也曰餘食贅行物或惡之

Those who abide by dao would say, “Food waste and unnecessary travels are the kind of things that the people dislike.”

gu you dao zhe bu chu
故有道者不處

Those who abide by dao will expel these attitudes.
