載營魄抱一，能無離乎？專氣致柔，能嬰兒乎？滌除玄覽，能無疵乎？愛國治民，能無為乎？天門開闔，能為雌乎？明白四達，能無知乎？生之蓄之，生而不有，為而不恃，長而不宰，是謂玄德。 |

When you act, are you consistent with your thoughts on social harmony without deviation? |

zhuan qi zhi rou, neng ying er hu |
When you contemplate, can you keep your mind as tender as that of an infant without stubbornness? |

di chu xuan lan, neng wu ci hu |
When you cleanse this mirror beyond imagination that reflects the reality of society, can you manage to keep it without stain? |
|
ai guo zhi min, neng |
When you run the country and govern the people, can you not take the fruits of people’s labor into your possession? |
|
tian men kai he, neng |
When you contemplate to explore new knowledge for the benefit of the country, can you maintain the attitude of maternal care? |
|
ming bai si da, neng |
When you want to realize society in a wider scope, can you manage to empty all of the stubborn thoughts in your mind? |
|
sheng zhi xu zhi |
Actuate the people to live their own life and let them feed themselves. |
|
sheng er bu you |
Actuate the people to work and do not deprive them of their production. |
|
wei er bu shi |
Actuate a viable living environment for the people and do not feel self-aggrandizing about your leadership. |
|
zhang er bu zai |
Lead and govern the country with supportive leadership, and do not just supervise and focus on the share of what is produced by the people. |
|
shi wei xuan de |
That is regarded as de beyond imagination. |
